On December 19, the Tennessee Department of Education released the 2023-24 State Report Card with additional data, including school letter grades. The A-F school letter grades for Tennessee schools were implemented in 2023. School letter grades are calculated using several pieces of data, including student achievement and growth on standardized assessments, subgroup performance, and college and career readiness at the high school level. Since implementation, CMCSS has not had any schools rated at the lowest level, an F. CMCSS has continued this trend in 2023-24 and made significant improvements from 2022-23.

In CMCSS, 90% of schools received an average or better letter grade of an A, B, or C, an increase from 73% in 2022-2023. Nearly half of CMCSS schools performed in the top categories, earning an A or B, and the number of schools earning a D decreased by 64%. There were no F grades in CMCSS.

Over 30% of schools improved their letter grades from last year, including a significant 3-grade improvement at Northeast Elementary School from a D to an A, and 2-grade improvements at Montgomery Central Middle School (C to A) and Moore Magnet Elementary School (D to B).

"Over the past eight years of teaching, I`ve witnessed firsthand the adversity many of our students face," said Ms. Orillion. "What has resonated most deeply with me, however, is the universal desire for a sense of belonging. Whether it`s a student offering help to a classmate in need or assisting with daily tasks, their acts of kindness and support speak to a deeper truth: we all thrive when we feel seen, valued, and connected. Despite our diverse backgrounds, the students have shown me that belonging is not about similarity but about the willingness to meet each other where we are and lift one another up."

Joyce Bates has spent 24 years as an educator and currently teaches 3rd-grade at Carmel Elementary. "My students have taught me that the growth of a child is larger than a test score and should not be approached as a one-size-fits-all," says Ms. Bates. "Every child has a story, and I have to build a relationship to help each student meet his/her highest potential."

As one of the school`s 2024-25 Teachers of the Year, Ms. Quinnan shares that she truly enjoys teaching students about writing. "Writing instruction is one thing that I always look forward to teaching. Not just the mechanics of writing but how it allows them to share their voice and perspectives on a topic. By guiding them to analyze texts and think critically, we get to see their unique ways of thinking as they develop and strengthen their writing skills," she said.

Katie Bush has taught for 11 years, spending her career in Special Education. "I have loved every year," she shared. "I’ve been in a self-contained setting, alternative school setting, and a resource/inclusion setting."

"The biggest thing I’ve learned from my students is that no matter what adversity they have faced in their young lives if they trust and know that you will never give up on them, they will THRIVE in so many ways," said Ms. Bush. "I love watching my students experience their `ah-ha` moments when they’ve realized they’ve mastered a goal or are able to solve a problem they didn’t think they could do.
