Katie Bush has taught for 11 years, spending her career in Special Education. "I have loved every year," she shared. "I’ve been in a self-contained setting, alternative school setting, and a resource/inclusion setting."

"The biggest thing I’ve learned from my students is that no matter what adversity they have faced in their young lives if they trust and know that you will never give up on them, they will THRIVE in so many ways," said Ms. Bush. "I love watching my students experience their 'ah-ha' moments when they’ve realized they’ve mastered a goal or are able to solve a problem they didn’t think they could do. I love being their teacher and their biggest cheerleader! My students always know that I will support them, no matter what. ❤"

We love celebrating our teachers as they make so many positive impacts on our students! Through February 21, the district will continue celebrating our Teachers of the Year as we move towards the annual Teachers of the Year event hosted by the CMC Education Foundation.

Katie Pardue loves to watch her 4th-grade students engage in the classroom. For nine years, she has taught elementary students about character and compassion.

"My favorite unit in 4th grade reading to teach is Unit 2, `Characters’ Actions and Reactions,`"says Ms. Pardue. "I love this unit because it allows us to dive into text that the students thoroughly enjoy. This unit incorporates drama’s, so students are given the opportunity to act them out and play a part in the learning. It fosters great conversations about how our personal words and actions tell people a lot about who we are. We learn a lot about how we should treat others and how others also want to be treated. This is the unit that typically grabs my students attention and fosters a love of reading."

Today we are celebrating Ms. Giacchino, a Teacher of the Year for Kirkwood Elementary. For the past six years, Ms. Giacchino has been teaching perseverance and resiliency.

"As a K-5 special education teacher in a CDC classroom, the daily challenges in a self-contained life skills classroom are real, but so are the rewards," says Ms. Giacchino. "This experience has taught me the value of perseverance and the impact of maintaining a positive outlook. My students continually show resilience in the face of adversity, which inspires me to stay resilient and positive for them. Teaching in a self-contained life skills class has been a journey of growth and learning. It’s about building trust, celebrating small victories, and creating a compassionate and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. The experience has profoundly shaped my understanding of what it means to teach, guide, and support students with diverse abilities."

Julie Barrow is a 6th-grade teacher who has been shaping lives for the past 18 years. This year, we are celebrating her as Kirkwood Middle`s Teacher of the Year!

When asked what her favorite lesson is each year, she said, "Funny enough, I love teaching poetry. Coming into 6th grade, students are usually apprehensive about poetry, but I try to make it fun and engaging. I love how poetry allows for personal interpretation; every student can connect with a poem in a unique way based on their experiences and feelings."

"Additionally, poetry can introduce complex themes and emotions in a compact format, prompting deep discussions about meaning, imagery, and sound," said Ms. Barrow. "I enjoy guiding students through the process of analyzing poems and then inviting them to write their own, which often leads to unexpected and profound insights. It’s rewarding to see them discover the power of words and the beauty of expression through poetry!"
