The first Sarah Ditmore Cooper Award was presented 11 years ago in recognition of outstanding and multi-faceted support of students, teacher and staff in our school System. Named in memory
of Sarah Ditmore Cooper, one of the founders of the PIE program in CMCSS, this award carries with it a tradition of honoring superior contributions from organizations in our community. That tradition is carried on this year as the 2011 award went to Zaxby’s of Clarksville.
In addition to serving as a school partner to St. Bethlehem Elementary by providing hundreds of dollars in instructional supplies for a budget that was cut by 75% last year to donating food, drink, and gift cards to the restaurant and providing teachers with a special appreciation meal.
Beyond the dollars, volunteering and in-kind gifts, Tim O’Brien is an extraordinary person. Back in the hot days of early August when Five Star/ClarksvilleNow hosted the Stuff the Bus supply drive at area Walmarts, Tim was driving from location to location doing everything from bringing in supplies to delivering iced tea and lemonade to hot, sweaty, dehydrated volunteers, and giving free food cards to everyone who donated supplies. He even jump-started the FiveStar van when the battery died. And on that day, Tim asked the School System to let him and Zaxby’s do even more. This show of passion for supporting students is exactly what the Sarah Ditmore Cooper Award stands for.
