Four CMCSS students travel to Brazil
October 2, 2023
Join us in congratulating four CMCSS students, who recently traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The student-athletes represented Team USA by competing in the AAU-IFS Olympics in wrestling.
It was the first time any of the students had experienced international travel. They joined 60 other athletes with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to represent the country on an international stage. The AAU team competed in fencing, karate, swimming, and wrestling.
“It was my first time being on a plane,” admitted Lexi Dean, a 9th-grader at West Creek High. She competed alongside her best friend, Janiya Johnson, who is also at West Creek. Janiya earned a gold medal in Girls’ Freestyle 66kg, and Lexi earned a silver medal in Girls’ Freestyle 58kg.
The sights and sounds of Brazil were a memorable experience for the group. “Brazil is really beautiful. I like the country,” said Luke Louzensky, a 9th-grader at Kirkwood High. Luke earned a bronze medal in Boys’ Freestyle 62 kg.
Over 2,100 athletes from 48 countries participated in the second annual ISF U15 Gymnasiade. “There were a lot of people from other countries. We did our own thing and saw some really nice beaches,” said Cameron Snyder, an 8th-grade student at Kirkwood Middle. Cameron earned a bronze medal in both Boys Freestyle 41kg and Boys Greco 41kg.
Congratulations, student-athletes!
