Richview Middle School Wins TVA STEM Grant

Richview Middle School has been awarded a grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority, in partnership with Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc., a TVA retiree organization, to develop science, technology, engineering, and math education projects to help spark student interest in future careers in STEM-related fields. Teachers across TVA’s seven-state region applied for funding of up to $5,000 for projects, and 233 applications were selected. Schools that are awarded grants must receive their power from a local power company served by TVA. Richview Middle School is served by CDE Lightband. Richview Middle School will use the grant to purchase SPIKE™ Prime Sets and Expansion Kits to aid students in applying the engineering and design process as they build and code Lego robots to accomplish specific tasks. Students will work in groups to create prototypes, test, and continually improve their design as they complete challenges with their robots. “TVA is committed to supporting STEM education to help develop today’s students into tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, and IT professionals,” said Jeannette Mills, TVA executive vice president, and chief external relations officer. “It’s inspiring to be able to contribute to the innovators of the next generation.” Since 2018, TVA and BVI have awarded nearly $2 million in STEM grants to support local education. Fourth-grade Civics Project Inspires Pollinator Week in Montgomery County

The community will soon be buzzing with excitement from Carmel Elementary 4th-graders’ civics projects. The students created projects around the problem of pollinators. All students prepared letters to the city and county mayors, advocating for the community to adopt a Pollinator Week. During the district’s STEM Expo at Austin Peay State University’s Dunn Center, a group of fourth-grade students discussed their project, “What would a garden be without pollinators?” Select students had the opportunity to present their letters in-person to a panel of honorary guests. Mayor Joe Pitts, City of Clarksville, Mayor Jim Durrett, Montgomery County Government, Mr. Aaron Compton, Social Studies Consulting Teacher (3-8), Mr. Cam Wheeler, CMC Bee Keepers Association, and Ms. Regina Hampton, The Food Initiative, listened to students as they discussed the problems and solutions needed for pollinators to thrive in the area. Following the presentation, both mayors commended the students on their commitment to the community. They agreed to review the opportunity to have June 20 – 27 recognized as Pollinator Week in Montgomery County. UPDATE: Free Curbside Meals Will Be Available Through July 27
CMCSS will continue offering free meals to children 18 and under in Clarksville-Montgomery County beginning Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Administrative Appointments Announced in May 2022

The following administrative appointments were announced on May 24, 2022. Kenwood Middle School Assistant Principal Denika Rucker has been selected as an assistant principal at Kenwood Middle School. She currently serves as an assistant principal at H.G. Hill Middle School in Nashville. Previously, she has served as a Dean of Students, school counselor, and clinical therapist. Additionally, she has served as an adjunct faculty member at Volunteer State Community College. Rucker is currently pursuing her Ed.D. in Learning Organizations and Strategic Change at Lipscomb University. She earned her Ed.S. in Instructional Leadership from Union University and both her M.S. in Guidance and Counseling and B.S. in Psychology from Tennessee State University. Hazelwood Elementary School Assistant Principal Barbara Denhart has been selected as an assistant principal at Hazelwood Elementary School. She currently serves as an Intervention Coordinator at Barkers Mill Elementary School. She began her career in CMCSS in 1996 and has served at Kenwood, Ringgold, and West Creek elementary schools during her tenure as a K-2 teacher, special education and extended resource teacher, Academic Coach, and Multi-Classroom Leader for Special Populations. Denhart earned her Educational Leadership and Special Education K-12 endorsements at UT Martin, M.A. in Education from Cumberland University, and B.S. in Education from Murray State University. She completed the CMCSS Aspiring Administrator’s Academy, McREL Balanced Leadership training, and the CMCSS Introduction to Leadership Course. Rossview Elementary School Assistant Principal Julie Amstutz has been selected as an assistant principal at Rossview Elementary School. TCAP Scores Not Included in Students’ Spring 2022 Grades
CMCSS will not include the TCAP state standardized test results as part of students’ final grades this school year.
Understanding Anxiety: Students Speak Up
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Several students came forward to share their journey with mental health, in the hopes to encourage others to do the same.
