Clarksville Teaching Fellows 2019-2020
THIS NEWS STORY IS FROM 2018 FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE POSTED IN A DIFFERENT STORY. Clarksville Teaching Fellows (CTF) is seeking current Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) classified employees with at least a bachelor’s degree and no teaching certification who desire to become high-performing teachers. This program is made possible through a partnership between CMCSS and the Nashville Teacher Residency (NTR). There are a limited number of positions for the 2019-2020 cohort. Application deadline: Jan. 7, 2019 Clarksville Teaching Fellows one-year program includes: – An 8-week internship so that you can decide if CTF and NTR are right for you – Rigorous, hands-on night classes taught in Nashville by NTR to complement classroom work in CMCSS – Mentoring, coaching and support from NTR staff and experienced CMCSS educators Teacher Placement: We guarantee a full-time teaching position at a CMCSS school for all CTF graduates. Technology Library Card
The Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library offers technology cards for each student in Montgomery County. This card allows students to access library services including R.E.A.D.S., Freegal, Mango, Universal Class, Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL), Tumblebooks and more.
Executive Director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation Selected
James “O’Bee” O’Bryant has been selected as Executive Director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation, replacing Abby Binkley who was named Assistant Principal at Glenellen Elementary School. O’Bryant currently is Vice President of Development for Progressive Directions where he has been since 2015. Prior to that, he served as Executive Director of the Clarksville Area YMCA, where he was responsible for overseeing a $3.2 million budget. His experience includes fundraising for an annual giving campaign, totaling $260,000; and securing grant funding of more than $100,000. In total, he has more than 20 years of experience in not-for-profit leadership. He earned his B.S. from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. He will be joining the staff full-time Oct. 29.
Administrator Appointment Announced
Melanie Steinlage, who has served as the academic coach at Byrns Darden Elementary, has been appointed to the position of assistant principal, replacing Dr. Nabraunda Jackson who is now principal at the school. She has worked in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System since 2010, first as a teacher at Hazelwood Elementary, then as an academic coach at Hazelwood, and most recently at Byrns Darden. She earned her M.S. in educational leadership K-12 from the University of Tennessee at Martin and her B.S. in elementary education K-6 at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She has completed McREL leadership training and three Kagan professional development trainings.
CMCSS Increases Number of Reward Schools to 16
Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools received good news on Tennessee’s school data release with 16 of its schools performing in the state’s top five percent and being named “Reward” schools. “We are very proud that our students are staying the course to make academic achievement and progress,” said Director of Schools Millard House II. “We owe a debt of thanks to our teachers, administrators and classified staff for keeping the focus on student learning. And, we cannot overlook the great support we receive from students’ families and the community.” The 2017-18 Reward Schools for CMCSS include: Barksdale Elementary, Byrns Darden Elementary, Montgomery Central Elementary, Hazelwood Elementary, Glenellen Elementary, East Montgomery Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Sango Elementary, Woodlawn Elementary, West Creek Elementary, Carmel Elementary, Rossview Elementary, Pisgah Elementary, Oakland Elementary, Northeast Middle School and Middle College High School at Austin Peay State University. CMCSS had 11 of its schools on the Reward School designation list for the previous year.
Principal Appointments
Two CMCSS elementary principal appointments were announced Tuesday afternoon. Jessica Harris has been appointed principal at Minglewood Elementary School; and, Nabraunda Jackson has been named principal at Byrns Darden Elementary School.
Assistant Principal for Burt and Oakland Selected
Buddi Sueriro-Dean has been chosen to fill the assistant principal position shared between Burt and Oakland Elementary Schools. Ms. Sueriro-Dean has 19 years of teaching experience, with the last three years at Oakland Elementary and previous experience at Glenellen Elementary. She earned her Education Specialist degree from Austin Peay and her master’s in educational leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. Her bachelor’s degree is in health and human performance with a minor in education from Austin Peay. She completed the CMCSS Aspiring Administrators Academy as well as CMCSS Leadership I and II.
Vaccinations Help Prevent Serious Illness
Parents, as flu season approaches, please consider having your child vaccinated. Over 1,485 American children have died from seasonal flu (or influenza) in the past decade, and 50 of those children were from Tennessee. Countless other children became seriously ill with this virus. The flu vaccine offers the best available protection from the risk of flu death.
Pisgah Elementary Principal Selected
Jami Skevington has been chosen as the new principal of Pisgah Elementary School. She replaces Sallie Oden who is relocating to New Mexico. Skevington has served as assistant principal at Glenellen Elementary since 2014. Prior to joining CMCSS, she was principal at Sanders Middle School in Sanders, Arizona. She has 13 years of experience in elementary education in CMCSS and in Arizona. She earned her master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and her B.A. in language arts and literature at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.
